How To Clean Your Shaving Brush
Badger Hair has been used for more than two centuries to make the best shaving brushes. Badger hair is different to many types of animal fur; like human hair it absorbs water and it is this characteristic that makes badger hair perfect for shaving brushes. The lathering process whips hot water, soap and air into a warm foam that prepares the skin and lubricates the path for the razor. Water is the key element in a good shave and the more a brush can hold, the better the lather and shave will be. The fine tips of the hairs help to make a smooth and creamy lather and the exceptional softness of badger-hair gently massages and cleanses the face, giving a comfortable, consistent and satisfying shave.
The longevity of a quality badger hair shaving brush is directly related to the care and respect it is given. The lifespan of the hair may also be affected by using some of the commercial branded shaving products of which many contain alcohol and shaving oils.
The real purpose of the badger hair in the brush is to be able to absorb clean warm/hot water and create a rich lather in combination with good a quality shaving cream or shaving soap.
After each shave we recommend that you thoroughly rinse your shaving brush in running warm water, shake it and then hang it to dry in a shaving brush stand. This will allow the hairs to dry naturally and prevent water settling in the base of the badger hair bundle.
Natural hair that is repeatedly left damp can develop mildew; try to avoid enclosing a wet brush in too small an enclosed space. If you keep it in the bathroom cabinet ensure that it has sufficient space to dry. If you shave away from home and keep your travel shaving brush in a tube or kit bag, give it an opportunity to dry as soon as you can.
No matter how carefully you look after your shaving brush it may, from time to time require more thorough cleaning.
You will need to purchase some household Borax powder from an ironmongers or similar household shop.
Method
**
1. Mix some Borax in a small container with enough water to make a thick paste.
2. Rub the paste into the hair of the brush gently and work it down to the base of the hairs. Leave it overnight.
4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
5. Repeat every two to three months.
** Use of shaving oil will reduce the effectiveness of your brush as the oil will coat the hairs and prevent the absorption of water. If you have used a shaving oil then first use some hand soap to create a lather in the brush and remove some of the oiliness. Then proceed to next stage.
